Many moons ago (last year) I dabbled in the art of Chinese ink painting, under the instruction of Prof. Jun-Cheng Liu. Okay, it wasn't dabbling, it was a class. Either way, it proved to be a pretty successful adventure in learning some different philosophies of art-making, specifically a complete mind-body harmony that stretches across every action you do.
Most of our time in the class was spent learning from ancient and contemporary Chinese masters, specifically reproducing their work. This wasn't a merely exercise in copying: We were supposed to explore and dissect every stroke the masters made, channeling both their technique and state of mind. Here are a few examples of my adventures (Unfortunately I don't have the names of the original titles and artists)
This last work was the end result of a lengthy project in the class, and also a completely original work. Toward the end of my class, I decided to teach myself paper marbling. While I didn't have the time or equipment to fully master the techniques, I did produce a few marbles that fit within the theme of Mountain and Water Painting. Combined with a few brush strokes, I turned a relatively random blob into a pretty convincing landscape.
Enjoy!
